| All text in Words Behind Words… come from two poems by Sappho; however, not directly. The words and syllables are fragmented and rearranged to create a variety of sounds, noise, and meanings. There are two metaphors: 1) Almost none of Sappho’s poems are discovered complete but only fragments. The nature and the earth would have worked differently, and could have fragmented and rearranged these poems like the text of this piece. 2) Sappho’s poetry reading society on the Island of Lesbos. Some syllables and words disappear from the sound of southern wind and ocean wave. And Words Behind Words is a recreation of missing Sappho’s syllables and words. |
