Program note:
Sweeping Buddhist is about cleaning up the trash.  The direct presentation of this idea is obvious in the Percussion part – There is a small amount of trash on the floor before the performance, and throughout the piece the percussionist cleans the floor by using a broom and a vacuum cleaner (the piece concludes with a vacuum cleaner solo).

All musical events and gestures are derived from two principals:

“Trash”:  Extremely fragmented musical materials come from my previous compositions’ “left over”.  They are all finely chopped and thrown to the musical staff lines.  Jackson Polluck dripped the paint on campus, and I dripped musical notes on the manuscript paper.

“Clearning”:  When one cleans with the broom, there are many interesting motions which are very related to music:  Sweeping sideways, vertically, up, down, in circular motion, zigzag, lifting and pushing.  The frictions between the broom and the floor constantly change and the trash makes crunchy noise.  Vacuum cleaner adds the dimention of sucking up air stream and mechanical noise.  Sometimes the air stream is disturbed by different sizes of trash and the engine changes the speed and temperature.
